From the iconic 365 GTB/4 Daytona to the 812 Superfast, Ferrari has created some of the greatest V12 Grand Tourers in the world. Still, no one expected the Maranello boffins to keep the 12-cylinder engine in their new Grand Tourer with electrification gradually increasing its influence in the supercar world. However, the new Ferrari 12Cilindri quickly takes its place as one of the best in Maranello with its V12 6.5-lite soul returning to the stratosphere at 9500 rpm without being electrified.
This is a pure celebration of what Ferrari is best known for and rejects any kind of hybrid technology in favor of a naturally noisy old engine. We recently had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the car as it arrived in Australia for an exclusive customer and media event.
Priced from AUD$803,500 before customization and on-road costs for the Coupe and AUD$886,800 for the Spider, this is the Ferrari of the few.
Enthusiast Motor Insurance
In addition to the striking lines, what lies beneath its long shell has been the talk of the town. How Ferrari managed to keep its V12 alive with ever-tightening grip on the exhaust is anyone’s guess. The 6.5-liter 12-cylinder engine develops 819 horsepower, which is not a huge jump in power over the 812 Superfast. However, the focus here is not on pure power, but finally the formula that Ferrari has been perfecting for decades. Who needs more than 800 horsepower anyway?
The engine gets some of its components adapted from the Russian Competizione 812 and the engineers have worked hard to make the V12 revs higher as the weight of the powertrain has been reduced. The broad power curve also means that 80 percent of the total torque is available at just 2,500 rpm. The standard eight-speed dual-clutch automatic is also tuned for tight turns and short ratios in low gear, while eighth gear improves efficiency when traveling long distances. The shorter distance on the 812 Superfast should mean even sharper handling.
The amazing style also surprised everyone. This is no retro pastiche with a Prancing Horse badge; instead, it’s a fascinating celebration of Ferrari’s past and future. The front clearly harkens back to the 365 GTB/4 Daytona with a distinctive wedge shape, and looks as GT as the edgy 812 Superfast. The shape is cleaner and flows better, without any aerodynamic fripperies attached to the outside.
A black panel at the end (which cannot be painted) connects the headlights and, without a doubt, this has to be the most powerful feature of this design, while the rectangular tail lights are also a clear step from the previous Ferrari V12s. . That said, the 12Cilindri is all about shock and awe, and it’s a design that only gets better the more you look at it. Ferrari also broke the aerodynamic formula without giving the car a large rear spoiler instead, getting active flaps integrated with the rear screen.

The interior is darker than the exterior, but uses the dual cabin design philosophy, as seen on the Rom and Pureblood. Look closely, and you’ll see an H-pattern gear selector running for attention between the passenger display and a bunch of digital buttons. Like the SF90, it’s a fitting nod to the manual locked gearbox that graced other early Ferrari V12s.
Along with the large glass roof, the interior is similar to the 812, while those looking for car toys over V12 power should wait for the Spider version, which is available.
We’re expecting a few examples to arrive in Australia from next year, and prices are set at AUD$803,500 for the Coupe and AUD$886,500 for the Spider, but that shouldn’t stop potential buyers from rolling over.

As well as covering up to $200,000 at track events hosted by Ferrari Australasia or its network of authorized dealers, owners can choose an annual mileage of up to 100km, or cover cars that have been in storage to get back on the road.
Ferrari says it offers cover that “recognizes the true market value” of its cars, including those that cost more than their original price.
Owners with large collections of cars or rare classics can purchase coverage of up to $50 million.
