The XUV500 did a lot of things right that made the car a resounding success. Think of the XUV700 as a much improved XUV500 – same formula, but updated for 2021. Based on the first impressions and the killer price, Mahindra definitely looks like a winner. The XUV700 comes with multiple powertrain options, features (many firsts in the segment), a spacious interior, looks like an SUV (not a small crossover/MPV) and most importantly, an attractive starting price.
The XUV700 (pronounced XUV 7 with a double ‘oh’) was called the internal project W601. This SUV brings Mahindra back into the game and boy, there’s a lot to talk about. Let’s start with drive options. The first is the 197 hp and 380 Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. It is available with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The other engine in the range is a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel that churns out 153bhp and 360Nm mated to a 6-speed MT in the MX (base) variant. The same engine is available in the higher trims in the more expensive variants and delivers 182 hp and 420 Nm with a 6-speed MT. In the 6-speed AT version, it has 30 Nm more torque. The panel gaps, while not as tight as we’ve seen in other cars, are flat, and the paint looks good.
The base versions of the MX and AX3 are fitted with 17-inch steel wheels, but only the latter has wheel covers! The AX5 variant gets 17-inch diamond-studded alloy wheels, while the AX7 gets 18-inch diamond-studded alloy wheels. Our test car was fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels shod with 235/60 R18 Apollo Apterra HP tyres. Some of the other test cars on the media drive ran with MRF tires. The rim and tire combination is good. It’s not bulky and the wing lights add a bit more proportion to the design of the car.

Overall, the cabin is airy, with white seats (thankfully they’re clean), large windows and a spacious sunroof.
There are no soft plastics on the instrument panel. You also get a smooth, white leather-covered crashpad that runs the entire length of the dashboard and adds a nice contrast to the design. The line also features brushed silver and piano black accents that complement the white color perfectly. The trim is completely black with white faux wood inserts, which we don’t like at all. Plastic quality is average, fit and finish acceptable. Although uniform, there are wide gaps in places and you will also find rough edges. It’s no Hyundai or Kia when it comes to plastic quality or fit. The overall quality of the passenger cabin is acceptable, but nothing to rave about.

The XUV700 is easy to get in and out of (compared to conventional SUVs) thanks to its high roof and low floor. Like the XUV500, the interior is spacious enough to seat 5 adults comfortably.
